members at sandy hook elementary. a similar weapon used by the accused mass murderer james holmes who killed 12 people and wounded more than 50 others at a movie theater in aurora, colorado. it was a gun, not a baseball bat, that took the lives of more than 335,000 americans in the last decade. that's more than the entire city of st. louis or pittsburgh or cincinnati, gone. it's a gun, not a blunt object, that ends an average 609 american lives every week. 87 a day, 1 every 17 minutes. just in the last 24 hours at least 6 people were shot in chicago. two fatally. in greenland, arkansas, a man is under arrest for a triple shooting that left his wife and mother-in-law dead and another family member critically wounded. and in orange county, florida, a deadly drive-by killed one and critically injured another. so with this many lives at stake, how can it be sensible to defend the means of status quo slaughter? what can be the motive behind blocking any common sense reforms that could help limit this horrendous carnage. >> the basis of the second amendment is about resistant to government

that invokes sandy hook and features the mother of the youngest victim of that tucson shooting. >> 20 heart-broken families lost a child in the sandy hook school shooting. i know how much it hurts. my 9-year-old daughter was murdered in the tucson shooting. i have one question for our political leaders. when will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? whose child has to die next? >> indeed. the same question could be asked by a mother and father of one of the latest shooting victims in our daily tally of gun casualties, including a 15-year-old girl shot and killed early today in milwaukee. in maryland last night a gunman left one dead and one critically wounded before taking his own life. in ft. myers, florida, a christian school was closed today following a deadly shooting in the school's parking lot on monday. then ra has issued a customary kurt statement saying they'll send a representative to meet with vice president biden on thursday as part of his task force. meanwhile, as the president calls for a national day of service to honor the reverend martin luther king jr. on jan

'm assuming that you've been doubly impacted because you grew up just five minutes, ten minutes from sandy hook elementary school. so you know that area very well. you know the school. >> yeah. i know people who worked in that school. and who passed away. and so this -- i mean, this issue is obviously of great importance to me personally. i think it affects us all equally. whether we're personally shot or we know people who have been shot and effected by gun violence. if one person dies, we all have a problem. >> julian, mass murders tend to grab the headlines as you know. but we've been tracking the daily gun violence in this country. and just in the last 24 hours two women killed in front of a senior home in tamarac, florida. in chicago one man killed another seriously wounded outside a store. in dallas a marriage with a history of violence came to an end when a man shot and killed his wife we've seen increased public pressure in recent weeks, but can we hope to see that extend to real action? >> i think we can. and that is the $64,000 question here. as you have pointed out, not just the

like those used in sandy hook, aurora, and oregon. what do you conclude from that? >> well, i think we can wait until tuesday to see what actually is on the list. of course -- >> why didn't he mention semiautomatic ar-15 rifles. >> it's a difficult policy question to figure out how to define these things and ban them in a way that worked. 1994 bill clinton passed a ban on assault weapons that was completely, you know, riddled with loopholes and had no real policy impact. it was a tremendous political win and we should talk about that, too, in terms of how obama moves forward in trying to win gun control -- gun safety legislation on the hill, but in terms of trying to figure out the policy end of it, getting it right may take a couple more days. i'd like to see something like that, but you got to do it right because last time it happened, they paid a big political cost for it -- >> without very much in rush return. >> the great philosopher ted nugent has offered this, there will come a time when the law-abiding gun owners of america will be the rosa parks and we will sit down on the fro
